"The Naturalization Act of 1790 denies naturalization to anyone who is not a free white--freemen, slaves, Native Americans, indentured servants, and Asians.

Although the residence requirement of the naturalization act was amended several times, the race-based prohibitions remained in place until after the Civil War."
