In the 1800's, Britain had gotten opium into China through middlemen smugglers, leading to China having an opium addiction crisis. China tried to ban the usage of opium in china, but trade of opium was simply unable to be stopped. This usage of opium and the implications it had between the relationship of Britain and China ultimately led to the two Opium Wars.
