While slavery had existed since ancient times the transatlantic slave trade was particularly influential in world history and the growth of the new world. Started primarily by the Portuguese, it would spread to most European nations. The largest uptick of demand for slaves came to help run sugar and tobacco plantations in the caribean and then the americas.
