The Aztec Empire arose from a group of people called the Mexica people who lived in modern-day Mexico in the city of Tenochtitlan. They utilized floating gardens called chinampas which allowed the Mexica to make enormous amounts of food so they could feed the million inhabitants of the city.

Eventually, the Mexican civilization began conquering surrounding territory and evolved into the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs were extremely militaristic and hierarchical, and the empire created tributary states out of their conquered neighbors, in which Aztec subjects would be required to pay the Aztecs tribute via food, tropical birds, animal pelts, and human sacrifice, among other things.
