Taiping Rebellion & Chinese decline (1 ene 1850 año – 1 ene 1864 año)
Descripción:
The Taiping Rebellion, also known as the Taiping Civil War or the Taiping Revolution, was a massive rebellion or civil war that was waged in China between the Manchu Qing dynasty.
The Taiping Rebellion was born out of several of China's struggles:
1) They still faced an opium addiction after the Opium war.
2) The Manchu-led Qing dynasty was resistant to reform and out of touch with their people.
3) China was still suffering from the economic problems created by the first opium war.
4) China was also suffering from overpopulation: stress on land and farms caused infanticide and famine. Low wages and inflation also occurred, plunging some parts of the country into famine, while the Qing dynasty sat and watched.
The leader of the Taiping Rebellion, Hong Xiu-quan believed he was sent down from God to get rid of the "demons" in China (referring to the Qing Dynasty). He was radically egalitarian, meaning he wanted everything to be equal. At first, Britain liked Hong Xiu-quan because of his ideals and also because he was Christian, but he was anti-opium and anti-west, so Britain later started supporting the Qing dynasty in order to squash the rebellion.
