Known as the bloodiest battle of WW2, the Battle of Stalingrad was a turning point for Germany, as the loss and mass casualties resulted in Germany without many resources and having to focus whatever's left on the eastern front.

The thing is, the strategic importance of Stalingrad is quite difficult to overstate. The city was home to a major industrial and transport hub on the Volga river. More importantly, whoever was in control of Stalingrad had control of the Caucasus which are an area filled with oil field.
