PITT (1 dic 1783 año – 1 mar 1801 año)
Descripción:
The King had to accept Whig Prime Minister because they had the majority. He disliked the new coalition so found an alternative PM in Pitt (who was technically a Tory) and appog inted him (Pitt had only become an MP because of a pocket borough) .
Pitt didn’t have support of the House of Commons so couldn’t pass any legislation. He survived with royal support even though most of the Commons were against him.
He spoke well in house of commons, appeared dignified and ignored defeats so independent MPs warmed to him . He attracted those who favoured reform.
Whig opposition was divided over the French Revolution and the war with France in 1793 which helped him to remain PM. Also, Pitt supported reform of parliament and ending slave trade, undercutting the appeal of the Whigs.
