Product Lifecycle
- Introduction = The GoPro HERO Session - HERO4 Session was introduced on July 6, 2015.
- Growth = The cameras were initially solely aimed for athletes and pro photographers (the initial primary initial target). However, later it seemed that the Session cameras had become amateur’s favourite for its ruggedness and ease of use - the camera can mount virtually anywhere, enabling a huge variety of shots
- Maturity = The HERO Session was quite a success that GoPro has also made the HERO5 Session camera later in 2016.
- Decline = Despite the Session camera having an ambitious introduction, it ended up becoming the company’s low-end product that didn’t work with any of the existing GoPro accessories that were being sold. Therefore, 3 years after, the series is now discontinued.


Innovation Strategies for design
- The ‘GoPro Hero Session’ is an architectural innovation. The GoPro Hero Session cameras are basically 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the other versions of the GoPro Hero cameras. Most of the technology components stay the same, but some of the configuration of the components is changed to meet the new design. For example, instead of having 2 buttons to the camera, the Hero Session only has 1 to fit with the new and smaller design of the camera. However, 3 years after the introduction of the Session camera series, this model was discontinued. It is revealed that the Session cameras were discontinued due to the company failing to differentiate the Session camera’s form factor and to the other Hero cameras. Despite the Session camera having an ambitious introduction, it ended up becoming the company’s low-end product that didn’t work with any of the existing GoPro accessories that were being sold. Therefore, it is now discontinued.
