Danish unification under a monarch has been in place since at least the eighth century; since then, borders have varied (particularly during Danish expansion and "Viking" colonization of European regions) and multiple Scandinavian unions of Denmark with Norway and/or Sweden have existed at various points, but the monarch of Denmark remains in place and still traces descent from "Viking" kings Gorm and Harald Bluetooth.
