The Second Civil War was sparked by King Charles I attempt to negotiate with the Scottish Covenanters and regain power in England. The Royalists were able to gather significant support in Scotland and in parts of England, and the conflict quickly spread. The Parliamentarians were initially successful in defeating the Royalists, but the Royalists were able to regroup and launch a counterattack.

Ultimately, the Parliamentarians were able to defeat the Royalists and execute King Charles I in January 1649, effectively ending the Second English Civil War. This event marked the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Commonwealth period in English history.
