Margery Kempe was an English Christian mytic who wrote "The Book of Margery Kempe" which is widely considered to be the first autobiography written in the English language.

After her first child was born, Kempe went into a period of psychosis and crisis. During that time, she claimed to have been continuously harassed and tormented by demons and devils, who (apparently) told her to forsake her faith, family, and friends.

Later, she claimed to have had a vision of Christ telling her that he had forgiven her sins, after continually begging Christ for forgiveness. After this, she became even more devout and wrote the first ever English autobiography.
