Stalin's Political Impact
In order to consolidate his power and enforce party discipline, Stalin created a series of campaigns of political repression and purges to eliminate his enemies and remove any domestic opposition to the Soviet Government between 1934 and 1938. According to an official report in 1937, close to 39 million were executed and 3 million imprisoned in forced labour. By 1938, almost all of the communist revolutionary leaders who had taken part in the October Revolution had been purged.
This helped Stalin consolidate his position in the Politburo.
