Japan was pitted against the US and the Australian Navies in this battle. Australia, being the ally of the US that they are, were enemies of the Japanese. The Japanese made it their goal to cut off American supplies to and from Australia by securing territory north of Australia. Eventually, the Japanese suffered losses that again boosted morale for the US. This began to turn the view towards the Japanese to a point in which they were not as big of a threat.
