The extent to which the LON was a success is a matter of debate. One of its primary goals was maintaining international peace, and in this regard, it was a failure the outbreak of WWII and the array of international conflicts leading up to it.
It did however create the foundation for the UN, another organization with debatable "success", but with a great deal more power than its predecessor- though Romeo Dallaire might disagree.

Reasons for the League's limited power:
-trade. member states were very reluctant to enact real sanctions due to its negative effect on them personally through international trade and interdependent member states' economies
-lack of real army/power to do anything
-member states leaving the league after refusing to comply with it (Italy/Japan for example following their respective invasions of
-not all nations were members- powerful nation of USA for example.
-not all nations were allowed to be members, which limited international authority and authority in those nations (Germany/Hungary for example).
-fluid membership due to facile nature of joining and leaving League.
-many of these problems (especially trade), were heavily compounded by the Great Depression

The League also did have several major successes in preventing global conflict:
-Aaland Islands
-Upper Silesia
-Mosul
-Greece and Bulgaria
