-Harsh punishment and poor living conditions for Saint Domingue slaves led to high mortality and low fertility rates, created demand for African slaves
In Haiti, slaves rebelled against their owners led by Toussaint, and eventually slavery is abolished under the Radical National Convention in 1794. However, when Napoleon establishes the directory in 1799, this is threatened. In 1802, he sends an army to re-establish Haiti as a colony, and captures Toussaint. Toussaint's successors continue fighting, and declare independence in 1804.
Free republic of Haiti joined United States as second independent nation in Western Hemisphere. Effects: freedom to people, stress on France, money spent on expensive wars
One of the few examples of a successful revolution from a colony.
