so during midsummer, a mysterious fog surrounds the city of fairne. no one knows where it comes from or why it's there, but people start disappearing into it and then these weird shadow wolves appear and then people start dying, crucified all throughout the city
eventually two playwrights, caverian maximus calmar (rumoured to be a descendant of anneliese calmar, first wife of duke robert) and caledoan duncan macgregor wrote a play about the events, in which james and his future wife maire solve the mystery while falling passionately in love. for the aesthetic, and also for the rumour that she was the servant girl he was in love with and all, their marriage was later romanticised, despite the fact that literally 90% of sources have nothing good to say about it, and that maire later even ran away with some drug addict
several scholars, most notably sika of sun-akkad, write about a heavy fog surrounding the city and people disappearing in it
around the year 3300, scholars believe this to be nonsense and to be based on paranoia and stuff, but that's bc a cataclysm is about to hit and magic has faded a bunch
it's been recorded that up to 250 people disappeared while thirteen people were killed. in calmar and macgregor's play, the beasts are actual shadows (like, the folklore shadows)
most historians agree that they are a metaphor
they're not, but they still think so
