Disease: AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome)
Cause: HIV virus
Origin: DNA reconstruction almost certainly confirms that the disease originated in Kinshasa (the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo) around 1920.
Transmission: By far the most common form of transmission is sexual contact. Contrary to what some might believe, most cases occur in individuals who have sexual contact with the opposite sex. It can also be spread through bodily fluids (most commonly by sharing needles), and from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding.
Symptoms: AIDS has no exterior symptoms.
Prognosis: Without treatment, average survival time is 9-11 years. With treatment, average survival time increases substantially to 20-50 years. Half of infants that don't receive treatment die within two years.
Death toll: Over 30 million
Current Infections: Roughly 36 million
End: the AIDS epidemic is ongoing.
