US sides w France's colonial desires rather than siding w people of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam leader) turns to Soviet Union to wage war against France. French loss in May 1954, US splits Vietnam w Soviets/China in North and US in South. Send > 500k troops, 60k dead before reunification under Soviet leadership.
