ROK (Republic of Korea-South) and DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea-North) consider unification, but fighting still breaks out. Spring 1950 Stalin backs North Korea's plan to forcibly free South. Seoul falls to communists on July 28. UN demands North Korea cease hostility. July UN mobilizes. Oct 1 ROK/UN face too many Chinese troops, by Nov 30 quick retreat takes place. War enters a stalemate. June 23, 1951 Soviet UN ambassador suggests a ceasefire. DPRK wants peace, armistice signed July 27, 1953. Approximately 1.5 million deaths.
