New Deal plan Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) introduced amortized mortgage (15 year period instead of 5). Also bought and refinanced mortgages, allowing people to buy homes who previously could not. Federal Housing Admin (FHA) also made lenders offer lower rates and longer terms. After WWII, economy boomed, further increasing homeownership. Due to increased demand, companies began building sprawling communities on the outskirts of cities. First, aka Levittown, was created by William Levitt in NY. Many people moved to these new suburbs in a search for normalcy after the chaos of the war.

However, increase in homeownership was mainly in the white population. Loan, housing, and government program discrimination still prevented many Black Americans from buying a home.

After the heavy restriction on business during the New Deal era and the war, many companies advocated for a free market (like NAM). Thus, libertarianism became really popular. Essentially argues for an unrestricted, individualist economy.

Overall, individualism, both economically and socially, was the name of the game in the 50s

Suburbia was much more separated from community and government leadership that was prevalent in cities. Evangelicalism easily filled this hole. The ideas of the church reinforced conservative ideals and economic individualism. Evangelicalism came to define itself as being against abortion, civil rights, and female empowerment. These conservative evangelicals made up some of the most prominent voices in the Republican party. More radical sects of Evangelicalism emerged in response to the Civil Rights Movement and other liberation movements. These radicals were responsible for a lot of violence against Black Americans. They resisted Civil Rights Reforms tooth and nail, especially school integration.
