World War II (1 sept 1939 año – 2 sept 1945 año)

European Theater: US involvement in this theater led by Dwight Eisenhower, though he had little experience. Later becomes president b/c of his work during the war. Was good with planning and logistics. Planned Allied invasion of North Africa, in which the Allies planned to push the Nazis out of NA and go up into Italy and overthrow Mussolini. Successfully executed the plan in 1944. To deal with Germany, Stalin, Churchill, and FDR meet and decide to have Britain and US open another front in Western Europe (D Day Invasion). To weaken Germany and "crush their spirit" before the invasion, start bombing Germany. Many civilians die. Meanwhile, Russia invades from the east, winning the Battle of Stalingrad. Ends with D Day

Pacific Theater: US participates most in this theater. This theater was mostly US v Japan. Japan was a tough opponent. Most soldiers would fight to the death. Fighting style was much different from Europe's. After Japan takes the Philippines, US starts a land invasion of Japanese islands, liberating POWs and establishing bases along the way. Most famous was at Iwo Jima. Many die on both sides. Called "Island Hopping Campaign." After that, US embarks on another spirit-breaking campaign like in Germany. Start bombing Japan. Firebombed Tokyo, killing 8,000 in one night.
