Mostly grassroots (from the people upwards). Kind of the first liberals. Drew from both parties. Core values: limit influence of business in government, make government more concerned about ordinary people, push for more americans to become active in policy, use federal government to protect public interest. Hated Social Darwinism. Rejection of robber barons, unfair labor practices etc. Goals: want society to be more equitable, for people to have more activity in politics, domestic reform (as opposed to foreign). Often opposed imperialism. Leading progressives came from the upper and middle class. Usually from the North. Became an official party in 1912. Ran Roosevelt as a candidate that year, but he lost. Was his second term anyway since McKinley was assassinated.

Mainstream movement failed to adequately address racism and sexism. Women and POC often left to fight alone. Many progressives were also anti-immigrant because they thought immigrants were creating poverty and violence. Progressives became somewhat intertwined with the eugenics movement because they wanted to "research" how to make society better through empirical data. Thought this pseudoscience would help fix violence and cruelty etc. While some didn't, some supported imperialism as a solution to economic issues. Progressive Presidents like Roosevelt didn't do anything to further civil rights. No legal help. Basically ignored the whole issue. Woodrow Wilson was actively racist, promoted racist propaganda like Birth of a Nation.
