Emilio Aguinaldo was inaugurated as president of the First Philippine Republic 1899. US decided not to give them independence and refused to recognize the new gov, so a conflict began between the revolutionary forces led by Aguinaldo and the US occupation. Although the war was declared to be over in 1902, fighting continued long after. The war was especially cruel, with many deaths and many instances of torture. US established a civilian colonial government led by William H Taft. Gov tried to justify it by pointing to the benefits of trade with China and framing it as an evangelizing mission.
