Before 1849, very sparsely populated. Not enough ppl for statehood. 1848 gold is discovered at Sutter's Mill. News spreads and a bunch of ppl looking to better their prospects head to CA. Independent prospectors don't get much. Big companies use machinery like hydraulic mining to get gold fast. Other industries related to mining get a boom too ex tools, provisions, lodging. Lots of prostitution because miners mostly men. Discovery of silver and other metals too.
