Convict Leases (1 ene 1880 año – 1 ene 1890 año)

Descripción:

Although industrialization wasn't as expansive in the South as it was in the West and the Midwest, the South did enlarge its economy and African Americans played an integral part in building the rail roads across the South. However, they did not work as free employees. Most were convicts (most of whom were arrested for minor offenses) and were provided by the state to plantation owners and industrialists to build the rail roads in order to serve their time or pay off their fine. This cheap labor for railroad companies and plantation owners left African Americans impoverished and almost slaves again.
