The campaign to end or limit alcohol use. Was very successful and popular. Alcoholism had skyrocketed due to the earlier access that came with industrialization. Argued that alcohol led to other vices. It became a status symbol for middle-class families to participate in temperance. The American Temperance Society had 5,000 branches and more than 1 mil members. Led to a 50% decline in use and some states banning the sale of alcohol. The movement was spearheaded by women who were sick of their drunk husbands.
