Due to potato famine and Revolutions of 1848, thousands of German and Irish immigrants came to the US. Many Jewish immigrants came as well to escape persecution. Irish mostly settled in cities and took up factory jobs. Were discriminated against for their Catholic religion. Catholic immigrants from all over led to the diversification of the faith.
German immigrants often settled in the northern countryside and worked in agriculture. Jewish immigrants mostly in cities on the east coast.
The Democratic Party was much more pro-immigrant, since they were all about small farmers and businesses, and the Republicans were much more anti-immigrant because they wanted a focus on American industry. Immigrants tended to vote democrat. Were a key part of the Democratic Coalition in the North. Some wanted new immigrants to assimilate, and some catholic officials agreed, but others opposed this. Also, development of "ethnic parishes."
