The Great Society reinforced the idea of the President taking an active role to help American through social policy initiatives and business regulations that were started under the New Deal. President Lyndon Johnson passed legislation that aimed to address poverty, immigration, civil rights, education, health care and environmental protection. For example, Johnson passed the Economic Opportunity Act (1964) which provided food stamps, rent support, and pre-school education (Head Start). He also created medical and medicaid and passed the Civil Rights Act (1964). Therefore, Johnson reestablished the idea of an active president in the lives of Americans which strengthened Executive power.
