As tensions over the Cold War were winding down, the threat of terrorism and acts of terrorism against the U.S. were increasing. For example, a suicide bomber killed 241 U.S. marines stationed in Lebanon in 1982. The U.S. used military action, covert CIA operations and increased funding of different local factions to fight terrorism, but the issue is still an ongoing threat to the U.S. to the present day. The ongoing threat of terrorism, ensures that the U.S. maintains an ongoing aggressive, interventionist foreign policy.
