With the United Front, the CCP and GMD were no longer fighting, but were waging their own separate campaigns against the Japanese. The GMD was most directly targeted by the Japanese forces, and attempted to fight back with conventional armies, and incurred heavy losses. The CCP fought a guerilla war and incurred few losses, while also gaining popular support since they responded to the Japanese threat faster than the GMD had.
