There was great fluctuation in unionization during this period. The employers actively fought unions and the federal government routinely stepped in to support employers, and the media often portrayed strikers and violent. As a result, membership decreased to a low point in 1880, but it then it soared once more in the 1890s. The significance of the unions of the late 19th century is that they laid the ground work for the powerful and most successful unions of the twentieth century and all the gains achieved by workers such as a minimum wage and 8 hour workday.
