Formation of Unions (1 ene 1820 año – 1 ene 1840 año)
Descripción:
The development of factories and factory towns resulted in the decline of craftsmen. As a result, working men formed unions through which men organized in groups in order to achieve greater rights and benefits from their employers through their collective efforts. Unions demanded better wages and working conditions and protested employers' efforts to lengthen the workday. In 1834, in New York City workers formed the General Trades Non which provided support for striking workers. Although it was difficult to form strong labor organization, this early stage in the formation of unions, paved the way for the powerful unions after the Great Depression and the gains in wages and work day hours, and the establishment of the minimum wage that unions ultimately achieved.
