For the solders who battled in The Battle of Passchendaele was known as the attack of the mud, madness and the senseless slaughter of the First World War. In the late summer of 1917, the British launched a big offensive against German forces holding Passchendaele ridge, overlooking the city of Ypres, Belgium. The battlefield became all muddy and became a swamp. The Canadian forces started entering the strain in October, capturing the ridge and Passchendaele village at a cost of more than 15,000 casualties a high price for a part of ground that would be vacated for the enemy the following year. The attack of Passchendaele was caused by Sir Douglas Haig's attempt to break through Flanders.
