Sometime in 1563, Beowulf fell into the hands of Laurence Nowell, an antiquarian and cartographer. He scrawled his name in the top corner of the first page of the tome, and for this it is now called the Nowell Codex. Travelled to Europe in 1568 and died there between 1570 and 1572, leaving the manuscript to his close friend William Lambarde.
