The Nowell Codex is added to the Cotton Library (1 ene 1594 año – 1 ene 1702 año)
Descripción:
In 1594, Sir Robert Cotton opens the Cotton Library just after the birth of his son, Thomas. Sometime between then and 1629 when the library was nearly closed down by the government, the Nowell Codex ended up in his possession from William Lambarde. After Sir Robert's death, the library is passed to his son, and then his grandson, Sir John Cotton. John died on the 12th of September, 1702, and the library was passed by him to the Crown by 1706. As Britain did not have a national library at the time, the Cotton Library was moved to Essex House, and was the largest library in Britain for a time.
