Although Hitler had committed to truce with the Soviet Union, he attack them brutally, destroying thousands of aircraft, sieging major Russian cities, and caught the mass numbers of Russian troops by surprise, overtaking much of Western Russia and continuing to push inland. Significant figures in this event are Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.
