- Douglass describes in vivid detail his escape by train from Maryland, where he was legally a slave, north to New York City.
Harriet Beecher Stowe:
-Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which vividly dramatized the experience of slavery.
-Stowe used Uncle Tom's Cabin to publicize the horrors of slavery, bringing them to the attention of thousands who heretofore had not been particularly sympathetic to the abolitionist cause.
