Harriet Tubman:
-Harriet Tubman was enslaved, escaped, and helped others gain their freedom as a “conductor" of the Underground Railroad.
-During a ten-year span she made 19 trips into the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom. She led the slaves to the underground railroad which was a system that helped slaves escape.
-She fought for freedom for slaves
Fredrick Douglass:
-Frederick Douglass published three autobiographies.
- Douglass describes in vivid detail his escape by train from Maryland, where he was legally a slave, north to New York City.
Harriet Beecher Stowe:
-Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which vividly dramatized the experience of slavery.
-Stowe used Uncle Tom's Cabin to publicize the horrors of slavery, bringing them to the attention of thousands who heretofore had not been particularly sympathetic to the abolitionist cause.
