The opening of the Panama canal in 1914 caused a huge economic shift from chile ports being used to the American ones that left a huge detriment on the chile economy. On top of this, their value was reduced to half and international trade was reduced after WW1. This destroyed the chile economy and left it in a Great Depression. Chile was one of the worst countries to be affected by this. However, its agricultural industry had made massive gains during this period that helped shift away from other aspects of economy that failed
