McCarthyism is, basically, the practice of accusing people of being communists, even with no real evidence. Also, more generally, McCarthyism can refer to accusing somebody/investigating somebody, even for no real or logical reason. It doesn't HAVE to be used only for accusing people of being communists, it is just the most common use. Named after senator Joseph McCarthy.
