Mustafa Kemal—or Ataturk—led the revolt against Greek rule and overthrew the Ottoman Sultan. He became the first president of modern-day Turkey, and led Turkey into a westernized era of government, language, and clothing; it was all met with opposition, but he persisted nevertheless.
