The Battle of Fort Sumter marked the begining of the Civil War. It began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate soldiers began firing at the fort. It ended the next day when the Union soldiers in the fort surrendered. "After the Battle of Fort Sumter, several new states seceded from the Union, giving the Confederacy 11 states in total."
