Starting from Atlanta, Union General William Sherman and his troops marched 250 miles to the Atlantic Coast to Charleston/Savannah. The troops were ordered to destroy everything in their path, ensuring the South would be economically collapsed, as the reconstruction of the path would cost millions. This was one of the last battles of the war which truly sealed the deal on a Union victory, seeing that the South was too weak to fight a battle that was hundreds of miles within their own lines.
