A high protective tariff (or tax) was signed into law by the US government.South Carolinian's - specifically John C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with the high tariffs and felt that they targeted the south unfairly.South Carolinas nullified the federal law, calling it unconstitutional until a "force bill" was threatened wich would bring the national army into the states to make sure the law was followed.A compromise took place.South Carolina would pay the tax if the U.S. gov. lowered the tax.The U.S. Gov.would not send troops if South Carolina Agreed to pay this lower tax.
