Ashkenaz (1 ene 1070 año – 1 ene 1330 año)

Descripción:

During these years the Jewish community in the Rhine valley, on the border between Germany and France, produced important halachic scholarship.

While secondary to Sepharad, the scholarship of this community was well regarded throughout the Jewish world at the time and has subsequently become very influential and is studied worldwide.

Rashi and Tosafot both lived in Ashkenaz, while the Rosh was a refugee from Ashkenaz living in Sepharad.

Ashkenazi Jews trace their minhag (customs), culture, and halacha (law) back to Ashkenaz.

Expulsions from France and Germany brought an end to this physical centre, with many Jews fleeing to Sepharad and to Poland.
