Period of Interaction (1 ene 1835 año – 1 ene 1840 año)

Descripción:

1835 to 1840 was the period of interaction between American settlers and Sauk and Meskwaki communities along Crooked Creek and the Skunk River.

The United States had just recently obtained eastern Iowa in a land cession from the Sauk and Meskwaki, and had opened it up to exploration and temporary land claims by licensed American pioneers. The western boundary of the cession, which was called the “Black Hawk Purchase,” ran just a mile or so west of what is now Camp. From where Adam Ritchey and the other early settlers stood at that time, virtually everything to the west until the Pacific Ocean was legally “Indian Country.”

There were various native communities in this area, including a Sauk community only 4 miles west of this property, on the other side of Walnut Creek, and a Meskwaki community less than 2 miles to the north. Wapello and Powesheik were the chiefs of these two communities at the time settlers arrived. Wapello lived at the mouth of Crooked Creek, 6 miles south of Camp, and governed the Sauk community of 400 to 500 people by Walnut Creek. Powesheik governed the Meskwaki community just north of here, which had about 300 people. His main home was elsewhere, so a man called Chief Hardfish seems to have managed the day-to-day matters around here.
