Since the Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed the people of their state to vote on whether or not slavery would be legal, northern abolitionists and southern slaveholders rushed to Kansas to vote in their favor. The two sides would turn violent in Kansas. Angered by the violence, the Republican party was formed in opposition to slavery.
