This war was originally brought about because of the Cuban rebellion against Spain as they were trying to gain their independence from them. The US took interest in this in large part because of how the brutality of the Spanish was portrayed in American newspapers, something called yellow journalism. We took action in April of 1895 because of an explosion of one of our ships, the USS Maine, in a harbor in Havana, which at the time we assumed was because of a bomb put in place by the Spanish. The US readily beat the Spanish army and got control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines in the Treaty of Paris. This was a big turning point for both nations, as Spain would then decide to turn their efforts to their own country instead of conquering other countries. It also had a big effect on the United States as it put us in a position of World power.
