Some facts about tuberculosis:
Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This bacteria most often attacks the lungs, but it can also attack other parts of the body like the kidney, spine and brain.
In the 1900's only 10% of the people who had tuberculosis survived. It was considered a death sentence - a long, and drawn out death sentence. People in the 1900's who had TB (which is short for tuberculosis) were expected to live an average of three years - years filled with coughing and chest pains. It killed 194 people per 100 000, and it was the second leading cause of the death in the United States - again, this was back in the 1900's.
