born 1885 parents: William and Tacie Paul siblings: William, Henry and Parry Raised as a Quaker with beliefs of gender equality and betterment of society. “‘When the Quakers were founded… one of their principles was and is equality of the sexes,’” Paul said in a 1974 interview. “‘So I never had any other idea… the principle was always there.’” She had a Quaker education, “establishing belief in equality [and] …. [providing] a rich legacy of activism.” Mother was member of NAWSA, dragging Alice along to meetings. Alice paul graduated from Swarthmore College with a biology degree.
