Polyphony Beginings (1 ene 1050 año – 1 ene 1300 año)
Descripción:
During this time, Europe economically grew and the church prospered. Polyphony began as a style of performance and a way to accompany chant in church music, and was valued as decoration. Organum is 2 or more voices singing different notes in agreeable combinations.
Organum Techniques
- Parallel: voices move exactly parallelly, which the medieval period really liked to use for perfect fourths, fifths, and octaves.
- Mixed Parallel and oblique: the accompanying voice is a mix of drones and moving parallelly in perfect fourths, fifths, and octaves
- Contrary: The voices move in opposite directions, but the original remains more independent and prominent.
Organum Voices
- Principal: original chant
- Organal: the accompanying voice added below the principal
- Tenor: when the lower voice has the chant melody
- Duplum: when the organum is added above the tenor
Styles in the early 12th century
- Discant Organum: generally homophonous and moves in a lilting 3
- Florid Organum: super stretchy and melismatic
